This quilt was dreamed up when a professor I taught with at the dental school told me he’d probably retire in 3 years. To me, that’s a signal to at least have a quilt plan in place, but might include having the fabric bought and waiting on my shelf. I pinned a ton of southwest style quilts, but most used just a few colors in their patterns. Knowing the vibrant colors that this colleague uses in his paintings of cowboys, Indians, horses, Buffalo, etc., I needed a quilt pattern with repeating blocks of various colors, and <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/52794248@N06/25236491418/in/photostream">this quilt from Linda Miller</a> that I found on Flickr was quickly my favorite. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OUj8slo7ca8/XWszk0366oI/AAAAAAACBL0/V_FC1Atly2wRCFhNa1Td7YprsriSEbmRgCLcBGAs/s1600/25236491418_66449f7031_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="488" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OUj8slo7ca8/XWszk0366oI/AAAAAAACBL0/V_FC1Atly2wRCFhNa1Td7YprsriSEbmRgCLcBGAs/s320/25236491418_66449f7031_z.jpg" width="244" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
With no pattern, this plan began a frenzy of internet searches for helpful tutorials to make the center square and ALL the 1/2 square triangles I would need to make each block. I used <a href="https://www.getasquiltingstudio.com/2010/03/tilted-squares-patchwork-tutorial.html">this tutorial</a>, minus the "tilted" part to achieve the center striped square. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8xgM1H2X18&feature=youtu.be">This video</a> from Missouri Star was also very helpful. There was also a late night discovery of these fantastic textured solids at Connecting Threads that were on clearance, so I stayed up really late one night planning and choosing colors for a quilt I had no pattern for. I hemmed and hawed over which striped fabric to use and then happened upon a stripe at Hobby Lobby and picked up a Southwest backing while I was there. I had a plan, but I needed help, and luckily, a fellow dentist and quilter agreed to do the job, to honor the friend that connected the two of us in the first place. So I drew up a “pattern” for her to follow, precut the pieces, and shipped her part off to Kansas. </div>

I’ve never been a part of a swap or anything like this, so this was definitely new territory! </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
But it all worked out fabulously well, I received her blocks back here in Texas and got to work putting it all together! I had some lightweight denim to do the border, given to me by a lady who donated fabric to our church group (it was rejected by the group for their donation quilts, so it needed a home!). I tried this light colored denim first, and quickly cut out the darker shade.</div>

It all just came together! Well, long story short, it’s a good thing I got my act together and got this moving because he decided to retire in three months instead of three years! The race was on to hand quilt it, but it all turned out well in the end and it was a blessing to honor this friend that guided so many of us academically and spiritually through a very trying time in our lives, and beyond.</div>

We had a bunch of babies born at work, so I made a bunch of quilts! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I didn’t have much time to make them before the group shower, so I chose a very easy pattern called Storytime Squares from Made by Rae. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One little girl got this sweet quilt made with some left over Fandango and a few other coordinating prints and solids from my stash. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-79DJLstdHLw/XQRb8TMQRbI/AAAAAAAB9K8/VU5aCvfublAyNBI7X1eYM341zQhbu7yzQCLcBGAs/s1600/8E394913-1FEE-4DD0-AA6A-4246B0DBD9A8.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-79DJLstdHLw/XQRb8TMQRbI/AAAAAAAB9K8/VU5aCvfublAyNBI7X1eYM341zQhbu7yzQCLcBGAs/s320/8E394913-1FEE-4DD0-AA6A-4246B0DBD9A8.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One little boy received a nautical-themed quilt in navy, grey, and white. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KOIed6t1OcQ/XQRb7iLuPJI/AAAAAAAB9K0/6h1XaWAT5pki3JjjknQHPbXT0_8Z7bcwQCLcBGAs/s1600/888B096F-CCA8-40AA-82C7-3E9465BC9ED0.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KOIed6t1OcQ/XQRb7iLuPJI/AAAAAAAB9K0/6h1XaWAT5pki3JjjknQHPbXT0_8Z7bcwQCLcBGAs/s320/888B096F-CCA8-40AA-82C7-3E9465BC9ED0.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Another little boy received this quilt made with fabric from the Oh, Boy! collection plus some coordinating solids. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WN4gnzqpzYk/XQRb8WY76II/AAAAAAAB9K4/TdoWR4lW-ds_wQ6ogkcQA7kOVjB54MDXwCLcBGAs/s1600/C4D9B844-8BEC-4628-A036-F69CB452094D.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WN4gnzqpzYk/XQRb8WY76II/AAAAAAAB9K4/TdoWR4lW-ds_wQ6ogkcQA7kOVjB54MDXwCLcBGAs/s320/C4D9B844-8BEC-4628-A036-F69CB452094D.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I machine quilted them and used this as an opportunity to practice machine binding. I still prefer hand stitching the binding, but when pressed for time, it worked well enough!</div>

Way back, circa 2009, Gail Pan of <a href="https://gailpandesigns.typepad.com/my_weblog/2009/01/a-christmas-wish-free-bom.html">Gail Pan Designs</a> shared a free Christas BOM called “A Christmas Wish” that was right up my alley. It featured nine embroidered blocks that were so fun, that I printed out the patterns and cut out some ivory squares for the embroidery and then did nothing. Well, I finished dental school and had 2 babies, so I was busy, but, still, it sat as other projects came and went. I believe It was sometime around 2016 when I picked out the embroidery floss and traced the patterns onto the fabric. It was our first camping trip as a family and I wanted a new hand project for the car.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C7FNoqJKchE/XNLlgcKVgqI/AAAAAAAB8nI/kWeSl8W457AgQY6THSOZyG1mg2vl6aaJwCLcBGAs/s1600/F818A0F8-1472-4A61-A494-F89772C23950.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-C7FNoqJKchE/XNLlgcKVgqI/AAAAAAAB8nI/kWeSl8W457AgQY6THSOZyG1mg2vl6aaJwCLcBGAs/s320/F818A0F8-1472-4A61-A494-F89772C23950.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
So I sat around the campfire and stitched away on these blocks. At some point, I finished them, and they sat, until one day I realized I had the perfect fabric to sash these blocks with. It all finally came together and I chose to hand quilt the wall hanging with perle cotton in green, white, and maroon. I displayed it during this past Christmas season for the first time!<br />

I’ve had this quilt on my to-do list for a while, but as it goes for most younger siblings, it took a while for this busy momma to get it done. I’ve had an idea for the pattern for a while. At first I wanted to do a true Kansas Dug Out or Road to Tennessee pattern, but in the end I came up with a plan using what I had: a layer cake and charm pack of Fandango by Kate Spain for Moda Fabrics. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qTQtH8NfBnc/XL6ARljjEiI/AAAAAAAB8bA/vst6cfMgTVERIbl_uj8i24fG20PeDCxggCLcBGAs/s1600/72CB526E-CED7-4C49-9752-9BE054FC17E6.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qTQtH8NfBnc/XL6ARljjEiI/AAAAAAAB8bA/vst6cfMgTVERIbl_uj8i24fG20PeDCxggCLcBGAs/s320/72CB526E-CED7-4C49-9752-9BE054FC17E6.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I took each 10” square and cut it into fourths and used 2.5” white squares to “dog-ear” two opposing corners on each square. Then I put the four new squares back together to make the “X” - except for one “O”. I added a few solids from my stash to bring the block count up to 48. Then, I whacked the charm pack into fourths and used those as the cornerstones in the 2.5” sashing. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I hand quilted a large and small petal in each arm of the “X” and filled in the sashing areas with squares using templates I cut out and a wash away marker. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I bound the quilt in a sweet vintage green and added a label!</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One project that I finished and haven't posted about yet is my new to me sewing desk.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was my Aunt's dressing table, but even my grandmother made a cushion for the stool and used it as her sewing desk. After my grandparents passed, and no one else wanted to take it, including my aunt, I jumped at the opportunity to use it as my sewing table. I removed all of her notions (most of them really fun and vintage), and took the table home for a redo.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_83C3qMLhtI/XLJ5qnDBYeI/AAAAAAAB8Wg/KiwpJnQmn3YtZblA3Q4eP9mgPGZ0_yOfACEwYBhgL/s1600/18F3483C-35A3-4924-A0DA-5EE87EA25AEE.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1199" data-original-width="1600" height="239" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_83C3qMLhtI/XLJ5qnDBYeI/AAAAAAAB8Wg/KiwpJnQmn3YtZblA3Q4eP9mgPGZ0_yOfACEwYBhgL/s320/18F3483C-35A3-4924-A0DA-5EE87EA25AEE.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here you can see the mirror part of the dressing table as I painted it in the garage. It took a lot of sanding, priming, paint, and podcasts to get it done!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3K3L6vNO1-Q/XLJ5GV0BIHI/AAAAAAAB8Vs/lFCiQjD4tzUsXj3BqEPy7NysdCulh3eOQCLcBGAs/s1600/465C626A-2AAF-4D64-841B-51F7CDE3D720.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3K3L6vNO1-Q/XLJ5GV0BIHI/AAAAAAAB8Vs/lFCiQjD4tzUsXj3BqEPy7NysdCulh3eOQCLcBGAs/s320/465C626A-2AAF-4D64-841B-51F7CDE3D720.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I sprayed the hardware a nice gray. I took off the old fabric and disintegrating foam and started fresh!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O2sz2Upw7TY/XLJ5Ifz1qhI/AAAAAAAB8V4/5-u1xzZfs-Qf0ZSivFY6gX97xyPVLTv-ACLcBGAs/s1600/963890AA-32E6-48D5-AFB3-733A59262232.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O2sz2Upw7TY/XLJ5Ifz1qhI/AAAAAAAB8V4/5-u1xzZfs-Qf0ZSivFY6gX97xyPVLTv-ACLcBGAs/s320/963890AA-32E6-48D5-AFB3-733A59262232.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Slowly, but surely, I also finished up a few little minis to put up on my wall. I found these three granny squares at an antique store, snatched them up, got the stains out, and quilted this little runner.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sHGVmYySz2o/XLJ74gV6pxI/AAAAAAAB8Wo/FYEl_isDszg_JuCFUJ9X610wez_EdHEkQCLcBGAs/s1600/B7E60573-6682-46B1-9708-E0E8888592DA.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="945" data-original-width="1600" height="189" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sHGVmYySz2o/XLJ74gV6pxI/AAAAAAAB8Wo/FYEl_isDszg_JuCFUJ9X610wez_EdHEkQCLcBGAs/s320/B7E60573-6682-46B1-9708-E0E8888592DA.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I found this dresden plate at the same shop. I couldn't get all the stains out, so I had to carefully cut it out and re-applique the plate to new fabric. I did a little quilting and added it to my wall!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ddXAEVW5sc8/XLJ5GaYnyzI/AAAAAAAB8Vo/O5yD5yn32BMrpVvEPPnQEASHQA3g6fahACLcBGAs/s1600/24056872-1793-4905-9FCD-21232F384507.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ddXAEVW5sc8/XLJ5GaYnyzI/AAAAAAAB8Vo/O5yD5yn32BMrpVvEPPnQEASHQA3g6fahACLcBGAs/s320/24056872-1793-4905-9FCD-21232F384507.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also finished up this little cross-stitch I started at work one day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Y3ZIwg354BQ/XLJ5KfogDHI/AAAAAAAB8WE/aOqPEiGvw2AO2K-A5pQuXg5jWmeOJMkMACLcBGAs/s1600/F031C06B-ED86-4DA9-AF6E-1E1424EA7F05.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Y3ZIwg354BQ/XLJ5KfogDHI/AAAAAAAB8WE/aOqPEiGvw2AO2K-A5pQuXg5jWmeOJMkMACLcBGAs/s320/F031C06B-ED86-4DA9-AF6E-1E1424EA7F05.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I added a few things I inherited - this neat folded fabric piece from my NaNa:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And now I have the start of a mini wall!</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I started this little fabric basket a long time ago, finished it last year, and never blogged about it! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AEWo_dkZfEA/XKwMSyfPpJI/AAAAAAAB7P0/ZSyODc3pkegn1S8N6EfjqqGHy6Ld3rBQQCLcBGAs/s1600/472B2679-5C4F-4ADA-A865-44324ED61D90.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AEWo_dkZfEA/XKwMSyfPpJI/AAAAAAAB7P0/ZSyODc3pkegn1S8N6EfjqqGHy6Ld3rBQQCLcBGAs/s320/472B2679-5C4F-4ADA-A865-44324ED61D90.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I used a tutorial I found by V and Co on the <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2009/03/fabric-easter-basket.html">Moda Bakeshop</a>. The fabric is a crib sheet I found in a thrift store.It happens to be the very same floral lattice crib sheet I had as a baby. Crazy, huh? I bought the sheet not knowing what I’d use it for, but the colors scream Easter, so there you go!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Since I had it out for the Easter season, I had to document it!</div>

I picked out this fabric long ago (2009), because it matches my parents' living room.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And it sat. I had a layer cake and a charm pack of the Portugal line by Moda.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I cut the layer cake down to charms and made 1/2 square triangles, not really having a plan.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I thought about a sampler. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ldDWL-Z_v20/XIkrNZcMy_I/AAAAAAAB7J0/NTlAIQKQgPYEMuXy2y8Z2rkBKMvF4yBzQCLcBGAs/s1600/4277765B-3C74-4B74-AFDE-F18AACDA622D.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1334" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ldDWL-Z_v20/XIkrNZcMy_I/AAAAAAAB7J0/NTlAIQKQgPYEMuXy2y8Z2rkBKMvF4yBzQCLcBGAs/s320/4277765B-3C74-4B74-AFDE-F18AACDA622D.png" width="179" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But ended up doing pinwheels surrounded by these squares.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-taU-qBzxE9c/XIW1BEmSLUI/AAAAAAAB7Io/yJ3zGo-6KqEfYB1sNq529xCQgE78XhUVwCLcBGAs/s1600/AC77E754-55E2-4850-AC4D-278E5F7EE95A.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-taU-qBzxE9c/XIW1BEmSLUI/AAAAAAAB7Io/yJ3zGo-6KqEfYB1sNq529xCQgE78XhUVwCLcBGAs/s320/AC77E754-55E2-4850-AC4D-278E5F7EE95A.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The empty space in the square gave me the opportunity to do some fun hand quilting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Time for Miss Lu to get a little brother and time for another baby quilt! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I took the "boy" fabrics out of the charm pack of Love U that I had and added some 5" solid squares to make a disappearing nine patch quilt for brother.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had this fabulous madras plaid fabric from my grandmother's stash </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
and this was the perfect way to use it!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I quilted all over with a meandering stitch and now it's soft and crinkly!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What to do with the girl fabrics from the charm pack? Add some solids and make doll quilts! They had fun picking out their fabrics, laying them out and pressing the presser foot to sew them together! I stitched in the ditch and bound them with the backing fabric.</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When I was a freshman at Texas A&M University, some students decided to sell $5 “Maroon Out” shirts the first year we played Nebraska in the Big 12 (1998). We wanted the whole stadium to be maroon to drown out all the red, so it was a mass produced shirt that everyone could easily afford. It became a thing, and lo and behold 20 years later, the company that makes the shirts re-released every Maroon Out Shirt and offered a package deal to buy them all. My dental buddy, and then-president of his local A&M club in Corpus Christi, offered to buy all 20 shirts if I’d make a quilt to donate to his club for a raffle. How could I say no?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lOBLGk4ds9w/XG4UGbSgOsI/AAAAAAAB5wA/jRzqfqCPMAwI5UEwwj8yZoxStkhKASbigCLcBGAs/s1600/D4A3BE90-1BA4-4F9A-8FF4-8E0F4E1CEB39.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-lOBLGk4ds9w/XG4UGbSgOsI/AAAAAAAB5wA/jRzqfqCPMAwI5UEwwj8yZoxStkhKASbigCLcBGAs/s320/D4A3BE90-1BA4-4F9A-8FF4-8E0F4E1CEB39.jpeg" width="240" /></a><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fMZ1yAQBv0M/XG4UCtCKPKI/AAAAAAAB5vw/r3qvXR8eOrMwFyUeMWz4aLGr999AHDvMACLcBGAs/s1600/3304C399-8E38-4913-9C4A-C63FA97514C2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The box came! And I had some laundry to do, because maroon bleeds bad. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9qCG118ZyQU/XG4UC0IkznI/AAAAAAAB5v0/JAFWsGiyX6gWdPWrzR0lFJzBxnJdLyjPgCLcBGAs/s1600/0AA260EB-4050-46B2-9C6A-BD23F4E85424.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9qCG118ZyQU/XG4UC0IkznI/AAAAAAAB5v0/JAFWsGiyX6gWdPWrzR0lFJzBxnJdLyjPgCLcBGAs/s320/0AA260EB-4050-46B2-9C6A-BD23F4E85424.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I got all the shirts cut up and ironed on to the interfacing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Didn’t I say I’d never do another t-shirt quilt?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Nag130kfcIo/XG4UGIahj3I/AAAAAAAB5v8/AlA5XsQ6GYYzOSY_VV5li0T72ItjAfSkgCLcBGAs/s1600/C697BC84-F505-4D3B-9792-0D9404029B69.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Nag130kfcIo/XG4UGIahj3I/AAAAAAAB5v8/AlA5XsQ6GYYzOSY_VV5li0T72ItjAfSkgCLcBGAs/s320/C697BC84-F505-4D3B-9792-0D9404029B69.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And here it is! I needed a bit of filler in order to lay out the shirts in chronological order and get it big enough. I turned to Texas history and included the de Zavala flag, the Dodson flag, the current flag, and an outline of the state in maroon, all done with piecing and appliqué. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ck6-m1Q9mh8/XG4UC6xXihI/AAAAAAAB5v4/pi5wa5ioc7wDnfAiHnz9YXOTdo_WQBbLACLcBGAs/s1600/B82D323E-BDBF-4100-A216-70ED9235B033.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ck6-m1Q9mh8/XG4UC6xXihI/AAAAAAAB5v4/pi5wa5ioc7wDnfAiHnz9YXOTdo_WQBbLACLcBGAs/s320/B82D323E-BDBF-4100-A216-70ED9235B033.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I added a few borders and machine quilted it with a lattice pattern. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I did a pieced backing with solid remnants. I don’t think it’s been sold at this point, but I hope it raises some money to help a deserving student with a scholarship!</div>

It all started with a text from a dear friend that a sweet little girl was going to be theirs! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then came the really tough decisions for me...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_CBobqL7p0o/XGOhiZ37gSI/AAAAAAAB5sY/a9WxPhCbK0kq8URsyo0MM-j7v2eDltBWQCEwYBhgL/s1600/59A3C897-4347-4EA1-BAE1-5181E29D16EB.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_CBobqL7p0o/XGOhiZ37gSI/AAAAAAAB5sY/a9WxPhCbK0kq8URsyo0MM-j7v2eDltBWQCEwYBhgL/s320/59A3C897-4347-4EA1-BAE1-5181E29D16EB.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I chose the City Weekend charm pack and saved the others for littles yet to come, not knowing her little brother would get one of them (more to come later!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

It came together in a snap! I love how the colors of the City Weekend line aren’t too girly, but have enough pink to make it fun. I backed it with a red gingham fabric and quilted it on my home machine with an overall meander. </div>

My cousin was expecting her first child and I had enough of this cheater fabric to make Mr. Spencer a cute boy quilt. I cut out a big “S” appliqué using the freezer paper method (this is a <a href="http://www.gigisthimble.com/2014/07/applique-freezer-paper-method.html?m=1">great tutorial</a>), and sewed it to the top by hand. Then I hand quilted around the blue gingham “S”. The back is the same blue gingham. </div>

I machine quilted on the diagonal through the squares and it looks great! It was nice to use something in my stash for a quick project!</div>

<br />
According to my sweet friend Jacki at <a href="https://jessetreeproject.com/what-is-the-jesse-tree/">The Jesse Tree Project</a>:<br />
<br />
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #444444; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 2.6rem; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">
<strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">T</strong><strong style="box-sizing: border-box;">he Jesse Tree is a way of telling the story of God’s plan from the beginning of time to redeem His people by sending a Savior.</strong> It follows the lineage of Christ’s family and key people in the Old Testament that God uses to tell His story from Creation through Christ’s birth. It is a countdown daily to Christmas with the telling of a story, and an ornament that acts as a symbol and visual reminder of the story.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #444444; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 2.6rem; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: grey;">A </span><b style="box-sizing: border-box; color: grey;"></b><span style="color: grey;">shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD— and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. </span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #444444; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 2.6rem; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: grey;">Isaiah 11: 1-3</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 2.6rem; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Once the kids were old enough to really sit and listen to a story (3ish? for us), I jumped on the bandwagon with the Jesse Tree Project and <a href="https://jessetreeproject.com/devotional/">ordered the devotional book</a> download. While the Jesse Tree Project is really meant to be done as a group of women each making one "day" of ornaments to share with the group, I went solo with this and created my own set of ornaments, using various sources for inspiration. I actually made two sets, so that each of my daughters could have one of their own one day. I made them with felt and embroidery thread and they have proven to be my kids' favorite tradition that they start asking about as soon as Thanksgiving is over! Each ornament correlates to a story in the Bible that we read every day in December as we lead up to Christ's birth.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My setup: I had tons of this brown felt, so I used it as a backing for all the ornaments. I cut different colored circles for each design background. After I embroidered each felt piece as necessary and attached with a blanket stitch, I placed a small circle of batting between the front and back circle, and attached a small loop of white ribbon to hang each ornament.</div>

I fell in love with Hope Valley by Denise Schmidt when it came out and waited...a little too long...to get some. But I found a pack of these charms, a jelly roll, and a bit of yardage on Etsy before the prices skyrocketed, so I had my chance to make a quilt for me!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AilLnTgTezs/XFMRFpv5jwI/AAAAAAAB5Oc/EtXVwqaslwcwjPTOFEz6ld9EKnb-qc7iwCLcBGAs/s1600/18826015853_da30ef6ea8_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AilLnTgTezs/XFMRFpv5jwI/AAAAAAAB5Oc/EtXVwqaslwcwjPTOFEz6ld9EKnb-qc7iwCLcBGAs/s320/18826015853_da30ef6ea8_z.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I slowly began to add some Kona White around those charms, and used the strips to make a square in square block...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

until I had a bunch of happy blocks! </div>

Our Target friends had baby #2, so Emily gets a quilt! We call them that around people who know the story, but may or may not remember their names. Because the story is pretty unforgettable! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A6A6NlZAa9U/VWtaaGa8yqI/AAAAAAABQNE/tKLQtkAKa4k/s640/blogger-image-636104024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A6A6NlZAa9U/VWtaaGa8yqI/AAAAAAABQNE/tKLQtkAKa4k/s640/blogger-image-636104024.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We met in the baby aisles of our local Super Target as we started our baby registries for our first babies. We chatted briefly about having no idea what we were scanning and got back to work. Weeks later, at a baby care class at our hospital, we met again and recognized them as the couple from Target. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YJgMt2CMI_o/VWtadv9oMwI/AAAAAAABQNc/ypX_X79CDcQ/s640/blogger-image-479987046.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YJgMt2CMI_o/VWtadv9oMwI/AAAAAAABQNc/ypX_X79CDcQ/s640/blogger-image-479987046.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We found out we had lots in common: our faith, a friend, our doctors are in the same practice, we both play French horn, grew up in the same area...like to shop at Target : ) We exchanged info and had a few pre-baby dinners out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Long story short, we ended up having our babies two days apart in the same hospital, and were on the maternity floor two doors down from them. So we decided to stay friends. And now our kids go to preschool together!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Iv9T88Rom60/VWtabcAyAwI/AAAAAAABQNM/N0bUM7b5uu4/s640/blogger-image-112667508.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Iv9T88Rom60/VWtabcAyAwI/AAAAAAABQNM/N0bUM7b5uu4/s640/blogger-image-112667508.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So I found a bunch of fabrics in my stash to match her bedding and did a little name applique using freezer paper. Instead of need-turn, I fused it on and used the blanket stitch on my machine - my new favorite! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Emily arrived on Saturday, so we already got to meet her! So sweet and precious!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-sey8wb-B-F8/VV376NbGe3I/AAAAAAABQHo/aSTk0bWdjqM/s640/blogger-image-1453897929.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-sey8wb-B-F8/VV376NbGe3I/AAAAAAABQHo/aSTk0bWdjqM/s640/blogger-image-1453897929.jpg"></a></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Since the baby quilt I made for Audrey matched the nursery, and we kept the nursery the same for both girls, I felt like I was off the hook for making Andrea a baby quilt. Forget that I had them 16 months apart and was working full time. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-D39p0Gprb0c/VV47ficRHII/AAAAAAABQIQ/8ibLTGdh8jY/s640/blogger-image--1225348017.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-D39p0Gprb0c/VV47ficRHII/AAAAAAABQIQ/8ibLTGdh8jY/s640/blogger-image--1225348017.jpg"></a></div><br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
But after I really got back to working on Audrey's quilt, and they'd see me working on the hand quilting, Andrea quickly realized that Audrey was getting a pretty quilt for her bed and she wanted one, too! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I've had granny squares on my to-do list and decided to go the easy route and use some Moda mini-charms of Bonnie and Camille's Scrumptious line and I raided my white stash for all the white squares. That means they're all a little bit different shade of white, but I was more than happy to use up my scraps. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4wk28jZ0Ovo/VV370geDj3I/AAAAAAABQHY/myPo3vO324c/s640/blogger-image--1134519070.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-4wk28jZ0Ovo/VV370geDj3I/AAAAAAABQHY/myPo3vO324c/s640/blogger-image--1134519070.jpg"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I used the tutorial from Blue Elephant Stitches since she used 2.5" squares, but didn't add the border, just the same sashing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-kzw4zzVJ5F8/VV373arXYaI/AAAAAAABQHg/ZG0x-pkoHlc/s640/blogger-image--1062532762.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-kzw4zzVJ5F8/VV373arXYaI/AAAAAAABQHg/ZG0x-pkoHlc/s640/blogger-image--1062532762.jpg"></a></div>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I had this sweet pink print in my stash and pieced it with some white to make it big enough (and knock down my stash even more!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
This quilt is about 44"x55" and I machine quilted it to knock it out and get it on her toddler bed. I bound it in the same pink from my grandmother's stash that I used on Audrey's quilt. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0qKMSxaPHqc/VV5UT2s1MCI/AAAAAAABQIg/N2aracFcbNY/s640/blogger-image--261195339.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0qKMSxaPHqc/VV5UT2s1MCI/AAAAAAABQIg/N2aracFcbNY/s640/blogger-image--261195339.jpg"></a></div><br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
And just in time for the<a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/"> Blogger's Quilt Festival,</a> I'm entering it into the small quilts category. Thanks, Amy, for hosting again, and thank YOU for stopping by!</div>

Welcome, Blogger's Quilt Festival friends!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So glad you could stop by!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I finished this quilt just in time for the festival and I'm so excited to share it with you!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This quilt began its life over 2 years ago when my oldest was around 13-15 mos old and I was very pregnant with my second. We were getting her big girl room ready and this Woodland Bloom fabric fit the colors perfectly. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Fast forward two years, lots of indecision on the pattern, tracking down another charm pack or two of out of print fabric, and lots of hand quilting, and tada! She finally gets her quilt!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I outlined the X's and all the sashing and then did a petal shape inside each arm of the X. Can you see it in there?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I added a second border using a polka dot from Connecting Threads I found in my stash that matches that deeper pink PERFECTLY and used the same petal template I made for the X's to do this quilting in the border. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
All I have left to do is make a pillow sham and maybe some pillow cases that match! And make a big girl quilt for my 2-year-old!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-de2pVuowjKA/VV4695srAiI/AAAAAAABQH4/WOIbzl7FChg/s640/blogger-image-170081238.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-de2pVuowjKA/VV4695srAiI/AAAAAAABQH4/WOIbzl7FChg/s640/blogger-image-170081238.jpg"></a></div><br></div>

I used a couple of frames from Ikea, some fat quarters, batting, ribbon and hot glue. I took lots of pictures as I did it and I'll post a tutorial later. Super cute, huh?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-T4gQXcWZmgQ/VR9RSenkN5I/AAAAAAABP5E/fZGncizImv4/s640/blogger-image--37448850.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-T4gQXcWZmgQ/VR9RSenkN5I/AAAAAAABP5E/fZGncizImv4/s640/blogger-image--37448850.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I've also been dreaming of an Easter tree, but gave up on finding one with branches, and went with an Christmas tree turned Easter tree concept. I got a foam cone, some glitter eggs from the dollar store, and used every bit of happy ribbon in my stash. Plus some. It is so happy!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Eis7PJ-_6os/VR9RWbluUYI/AAAAAAABP5M/mExFdpiNGFc/s640/blogger-image--917292689.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Eis7PJ-_6os/VR9RWbluUYI/AAAAAAABP5M/mExFdpiNGFc/s640/blogger-image--917292689.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Now, back to my main project. We're keeping the crib for a while and we'll make it a toddler bed soon. We moved her to the other side of the house next to sister so they can be close and share a bathroom. Maybe we'll regret that when they are teenagers!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Here's the view when you walk in the door. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-B4mGcm6Fz8A/VM_qCSOxmQI/AAAAAAABK30/VVUSll1Tz8M/s640/blogger-image--1191405517.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-B4mGcm6Fz8A/VM_qCSOxmQI/AAAAAAABK30/VVUSll1Tz8M/s640/blogger-image--1191405517.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I fell in love with these sweet prints from Rifle Paper Co. Audrey started with her when she was four months old and stayed until she was 3 and started preschool. Andrea started staying with her when she was 2 months old and started preschool at 2. Needless to say, she was a big part of our girls' lives and she gets a quilt!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DBZv4OMmgzY/VM2vpjzr8MI/AAAAAAABK18/W-2tSWNWyvk/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DBZv4OMmgzY/VM2vpjzr8MI/AAAAAAABK18/W-2tSWNWyvk/s1600/011.JPG" height="213" width="320"></a></div>
<div><br></div><div>Mimi is a lover of Christmas, so she got a Christmas quilt. Her family makes and sells Christmas Yard Art at Canton every year, so for about 1/3 of the year, they are pretty festive in their house. </div><br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QkMj2UNEIfI/VM2vpl1zpXI/AAAAAAABK14/-6DbKum1rz0/s1600/012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QkMj2UNEIfI/VM2vpl1zpXI/AAAAAAABK14/-6DbKum1rz0/s1600/012.JPG" height="213" width="320"></a></div>
<div><br></div><div>I received this panel of snowmen years ago as a bonus with an order of fabric from a small online shop that doesn't exist anymore. I knew I wanted to cut it up and make a table runner or quilt, but it languished in the sewing room forever. </div><br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j1x51ABRa3U/VM2vo6AfpuI/AAAAAAABK10/R0z9raX8-88/s1600/013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j1x51ABRa3U/VM2vo6AfpuI/AAAAAAABK10/R0z9raX8-88/s1600/013.JPG" height="213" width="320"></a></div>
<div><br></div><div>Of course, I decided a few weeks before Christmas that this was happening, so it became a late January Christmas/farewell present. </div><br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RFmoE8BVCk4/VM2v0-JzPTI/AAAAAAABK2M/AAQWDOK_PPg/s1600/014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RFmoE8BVCk4/VM2v0-JzPTI/AAAAAAABK2M/AAQWDOK_PPg/s1600/014.JPG" height="213" width="320"></a></div>
<div><br></div><div>I fused and then raw-edge appliquéd the snowflakes and then hand-quilted around them. </div><br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XLFsOB3in8Y/VM2v2d5o7VI/AAAAAAABK2U/TmJYSg_zqZ4/s1600/015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XLFsOB3in8Y/VM2v2d5o7VI/AAAAAAABK2U/TmJYSg_zqZ4/s1600/015.JPG" height="213" width="320"></a></div>
<div><br></div><div>I used white DMC pearl cotton size 12 to outline all of the straight lines as well. </div><br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nuVzB6J4Xrc/VM2v3Y1LZlI/AAAAAAABK2c/hX16_6Tp2lk/s1600/016.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nuVzB6J4Xrc/VM2v3Y1LZlI/AAAAAAABK2c/hX16_6Tp2lk/s1600/016.JPG" height="213" width="320"></a></div>
<div><br></div><div>Here are the happy snowmen!</div><br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I used some leftover red bias tape I had for the binding. <div><br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F6iJUBsF6lY/VM2wBP5hdiI/AAAAAAABK2o/E759qq88BrY/s1600/018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F6iJUBsF6lY/VM2wBP5hdiI/AAAAAAABK2o/E759qq88BrY/s1600/018.JPG" height="213" width="320"></a></div>
<div><br></div><div>I backed the quilt in a flannel Christmas sheet I got on clearance at Target many years ago. It's super soft and warm!</div><br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">...And the really hard to read label. I took the girls by after school to give it to her and visit a bit. She loved it! <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"> </span></div>

I caved to the princessy, song-stuck-in-your-head-constantly, little girl brainwashing that is Frozen. So, Halloween costumes were in order. Since we have two little girls, it kind of HAD to happen, right? I used this tutorial for Queen Elsa: http://www.mesewcrazy.com/2014/06/elsa-costume-diy.html<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YYvAw-kFDYY/VEcWvpHJHnI/AAAAAAAAtng/2sfcNRJPlmg/s640/blogger-image--433541037.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YYvAw-kFDYY/VEcWvpHJHnI/AAAAAAAAtng/2sfcNRJPlmg/s640/blogger-image--433541037.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><br></div><div>I just modified it a bit for Princess Anna. She has a separate tutorial for Anna's dress, but I cheated and used a second, black t-shirt and cut the sleeves off. I kept the blue t-shirt separate (they can still wear that everyday!) and attached the black shirt to the skirt like the Elsa dress. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-N8t32-Uswew/VEcWyRSy4II/AAAAAAAAtnw/_I-geppbw_A/s640/blogger-image--896626252.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-N8t32-Uswew/VEcWyRSy4II/AAAAAAAAtnw/_I-geppbw_A/s640/blogger-image--896626252.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I found everything at Walmart except the gold bias tape (Hobby Lobby) Surprisingly, Hobby Lobby and Joann's were total duds when it came to fabric. The shirts were around $4 each, the snowflake fabric was in the clearance bin, and most of the yardage was $2. I had the green ribbon and pink for the flowers in my stash. Even the snowflakes were in Walmart's Christmas section. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">For the Anna cape, I took a length of fleece long enough for a cape plus the shoulder drape and marked where the drape and cape would "meet" with pins. I then attached a length of elastic a little bit longer than shoulder-width and gathered the fleece by stretching the elastic and sewing a straight line from one end to the other. I attached a couple of ties, folded the shoulder drape over the elastic to hide it,<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"> and, voila! The fleece doesn't fray and this color from Walmart was PERFECT!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Kl0e_YJX-3A/VEcWuXyq3BI/AAAAAAAAtnY/VBqSf76hFy4/s640/blogger-image--1597661265.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Kl0e_YJX-3A/VEcWuXyq3BI/AAAAAAAAtnY/VBqSf76hFy4/s640/blogger-image--1597661265.jpg"></a></div><br></div>I kept it simple with the flowers. I sewed right down the center of the ribbon and I zig-zagged the flowers down because I was too lazy to go upstairs to get the fusible. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Two Anna dresses were an easy sew today in between laundry and dishes and Gilmore Girls. It helped to have it all cut out and pinned, which I did after bedtime last night. The Elsa dresses took a day, as well. I do have a few hems left to sew after we had a fitting. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I did make two Elsas and two Annas because two of everything is required in this household. It's like having twins. Kinda sorta. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-i33z5nyZTcw/VEcWw_tbTaI/AAAAAAAAtno/WDtUBOxvMss/s640/blogger-image--335662174.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-i33z5nyZTcw/VEcWw_tbTaI/AAAAAAAAtno/WDtUBOxvMss/s640/blogger-image--335662174.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">You can do this! The hardest part is the gold bias tape, but it makes the dress. You could totally do gold ribbon instead and use a black tank so you don't have to worry about covering the edges (I couldn't find one my girls sizes). </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Now, the challenge is to make sure the younger copy-cat is ok with being Anna on the big night!</div></div>Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14279175637331577005noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-856061497782812963.post-3502527489907993742014-09-22T22:31:00.001-05:002014-09-22T22:31:33.163-05:00Dress for a Three-Year-Old<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Audrey turned 3 at the end of August, and I stuck to the "birthday dress" tradition. I've had this pattern pinned for a while now, while I worked up the gumption to try it. It is the DIY Bishop pattern by Claire Meldrum and can be found in the Sew Beautiful July/August 2012 issue. I downloaded the issue for about $5. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Aa1ejs-ZtcY/VCDpg7JytVI/AAAAAAAAr-M/R_1BrxlMqZ0/s640/blogger-image-366093870.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Aa1ejs-ZtcY/VCDpg7JytVI/AAAAAAAAr-M/R_1BrxlMqZ0/s640/blogger-image-366093870.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Now, if you just Google "DIY Bishop", you'll find a handful of posts including Claire's blog about it (http://www.clairemeldrum.ca/diy-bishop-in-july-issue-of-sew-beautiful/), another blogger who made the dress in green for her granddaughter (http://californiastitching.blogspot.com/2012/06/a-diy-smocked-dress.html?m=1), and the Sew Beautiful blog (http://sewbeautifulmag.blogspot.com/2012/06/diy-bishop-correction-sb-july-2012.html?m=1). These are all important, because there are errors in the printed pattern and concern about the directions. Even reading all of the comments on those posts was helpful! You can see why I had so much hesitation to get started: there was a lot to muddle through to get the measurements right and follow Claire's lead to not cut out a portion of the neckline. <div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-umDdrp6D7c8/VCDpkeWv2iI/AAAAAAAAr-U/bHPLxhlkTQU/s640/blogger-image-159291057.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-umDdrp6D7c8/VCDpkeWv2iI/AAAAAAAAr-U/bHPLxhlkTQU/s640/blogger-image-159291057.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I chose to make a 4T, which was a bit big, but she can wear it with a sweater this fall. I LOVED doing the smocking! I'm a sucker for handwork, anyway, and it really did go fast. It became addictive to see the honeycomb pattern come together. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Other new sewing skills included sewing in a placket, sewing a thread loop, and French seams (which I added, and love!). I YouTubed all of those until I was comfortable and the placket was by far the most confusing. The pattern does not walk you through it - you are on your own with dress construction. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-SjCpEEsYVb0/VCDpfi3hC1I/AAAAAAAAr-E/-_rU_AVCLJM/s640/blogger-image--1365697235.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-SjCpEEsYVb0/VCDpfi3hC1I/AAAAAAAAr-E/-_rU_AVCLJM/s640/blogger-image--1365697235.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The fabric is from Connecting Threads. It's the cutest darker purple I could find. Audrey loved it the day it came in the mail! Whew! She's all about the purple right now!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I'll be making this pattern again soon for both girls' Christmas dresses. Once the errors are overcome, it really is an easy sew! </div></div>Abbyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14279175637331577005noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-856061497782812963.post-47292032248624875262014-07-23T22:25:00.001-05:002015-04-03T21:24:50.850-05:00A Quilt for Aven<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our sweet friends from college put off having kids until educations were finished and careers were settled. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NjqqR4w0JeU/U9B5o_UQP-I/AAAAAAAAp3c/UFgHHQJaIgU/s1600/IMG_5613.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NjqqR4w0JeU/U9B5o_UQP-I/AAAAAAAAp3c/UFgHHQJaIgU/s1600/IMG_5613.JPG" height="320" width="213"></a></div>
<br>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When the time came to try, it wasn't working, so tests were done, and they found out she had a rare form of uterine cancer (rare for someone her age). Which means hysterectomy. Devastating.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MhtU6cpKt0U/U9B5pdjyGAI/AAAAAAAAp3k/Q-7uPoQlk7s/s1600/IMG_5615.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MhtU6cpKt0U/U9B5pdjyGAI/AAAAAAAAp3k/Q-7uPoQlk7s/s1600/IMG_5615.JPG" height="213" width="320"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But they were given a chance to go through a really tough series of treatments and surgeries to give them a chance to have a family.</div>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ik6NQWPbAhM/U9B5pApom6I/AAAAAAAAp3g/D45GVYwhtdA/s1600/IMG_5616.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ik6NQWPbAhM/U9B5pApom6I/AAAAAAAAp3g/D45GVYwhtdA/s1600/IMG_5616.JPG" height="213" width="320"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They finished, and went to the doctor to start blood tests for infertility treatments (a given in her situation), and they were pregnant! A sweet, beautiful miracle!</div>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VZe2CkWDyAE/U9B5xLm3VSI/AAAAAAAAp4k/je7gU9LNBfM/s1600/IMG_5617.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VZe2CkWDyAE/U9B5xLm3VSI/AAAAAAAAp4k/je7gU9LNBfM/s1600/IMG_5617.JPG" height="213" width="320"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I tear up every time I tell the story. God is so good!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I wasn't really planning on doing an end-of-year post since I've hardly posted all year, but I guess I made more than I thought I did. I even made a blanket not pictured here. So, from the top:<br />
<br />
1. I birthed a baby: my sweet Andrea will be 1 year old on Thursday!!<br />
2. My niece Molly's blanket<br />
3. We did a winter garden this year and it was super successful!<br />
4. I've made lots of progress on those hexies. I will finish it in 2014.<br />
5. I made about 3 sets of these car seat strap covers for the girls. Super easy.<br />
6. Audrey's dress for her second birthday.<br />
7. Audrey's doll's dress.<br />
8. Andrea's dress.<br />
9. Andrea's bloomers.<br />
10. Vera's blanket.<br />
11. Audrey's 2nd birthday cake and party decorations.<br />
12. Starting with August, I made new shirts for Andi's monthly photo shoots.<br />
13. September shirt.<br />
14. October shirt.<br />
15. November shirt.<br />
16. December shirt. (I also made one for Audrey).<br />
<br />
There are a few things I didn't include, like the 4 sets of hooded towels I made out of necessity for the girls. And the starts of quilts that still need attention. I actually hope to finish a cheater quilt by tomorrow for a baby shower, so that'll get squeezed in before the end of the year. <br />
<br />
The coolest part of my crafting is that I conquered some pretty big garment-making fears and made dresses for my girls. Yay!<br />
<br />
The sad part of all this, which will be remedied in the new year, is that I did not make a true quilt this year. Blankets, yes. Quilts, no. So sad.<br />
<br />
Thankfully, I have resolved to make quilts for my 2 girls, and oh my goodness EVERYONE I KNOW is getting pregnant. Lots of quick baby quilts coming to a blog near you.<br />
<br />
Here's to a happy 2014! <br />
